OPEN POSITION : BARISTA

POSITION SUMMARY

Dear Mama Coffee is looking for baristas / cashiers for both Harlem coffee bars / all-day cafe locations.  Ideal candidates will be well-versed in third-wave coffee, with a passion for learning more and educating others. 

Job responsibilities:

  • Promotes coffee consumption by educating customers; selling coffee, preparing and serving a variety of coffee drinks, along with pastries and baked goods

  • Welcome customers by determining their coffee interests and needs

  • Operates the POS and handles cash transactions with guests efficiently and securely

  • Educates customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu; answering questions

  • Maintains inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply; stocking coffee brewing equipment; maintaining supplies, pastries, and cookies for coffee bar

  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs

  • Maintains safe and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations

  • Improves quality results by studying, evaluating, and recommending process improvements to management

  • Maintaining and improving the appearance of the store and coffee bar, including helping to bus tables and common guest areas

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading coffee, retail trade, and food service publications; maintaining personal networks

  • Clear and professional communication with team members and guests alike

  • Some table service of plated dishes, as well as helping team to bus tables as needed 

  • Light dishwashing of items used during service including coffee cups, milk jars, and more

  • Maintain and manage a clean and sanitized service station

Ideal candidate...

  • Is independently-motivated for excellence 

  • Excited to be part of a growing team in a collaborative environment, but with the willingness to work independently to achieve the necessary results

  • Proficient in coffee drink preparation techniques from pour over and French press, to espresso, latte, cappuccino, macchiatos and more 

  • Interest in tea with ability to articulate nuances to guests to assist in their decision-making, and familiar with steeping techniques

  • Some familiarity with other food preparation, including smoothies may be required

  • Prior cafe or coffee shop experience a plus 

  • Is punctual

  • Thrives working in changing environments, with an appreciation for repetition of a daily cafe service

  • Be comfortable communicating with team members, management team and guests alike; all team members are ambassadors for the Dear Mama Coffee brand and we want your voice to be heard

  • Daily hours may involve early mornings or late nights

  • Ability to lift 60lbs and work on feet for extended periods of time 

  • Familiarity with telephone, office, and point-of-sale software

  • Ability to clean and maintain espresso machines and coffee service tools efficiently and without incident

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

We are looking for both full-time and part-time baristas for both locations.
